Week Three

Well fellow Quick Starters, I did it. If you made it to my blog this week you will see my Web Caster offering a free report on Facebook. I am totally stoked. It took me all day today (Sunday) to:

a) get my autoresponder set up

b) my product edited [as an aside I was very worried I would not get approval for the affiliate programs in JVZoo as you had to have a certain number of sales – but luckily I knew the product creator and asked for consideration]

c) choose and apply for three affiliate programs to put into the Facebook Report and get the affiliate links and then put them into the report as clickable text

d) configure the webcaster

e) covert the product from a .docx to a .pdf and keep the hyperlinks active

f) upload the pdf to my thank you page

g) find out how to keep my thank you page private

h) sign up and test all the links … and yay it works!!

Tomorrow I want to spend sometime writing down all these steps in detail, so that it will be a rinse and repeat scenario. I have had WP-Webcaster since it first came out, but was too busy, too distracted, too intimidated to implement it. But making the commitment to this Quick Start Challenge has been really good for me – it pushes me past that fear to make it work!.

T’was a rough week for me. My J.O.B. demanded full time attention all week. I only got to listen to about 30 minutes of this week’s webinar but enough to understand was was expected. And on top of all of that one of my very best friend’s 32 year old son passed away from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Thankfully he isn’t suffering any longer.

Well I did it! I am not completely happy with it but I can only go up from here 🙂

Let’s see I left off throwing in the towel :0 well obviously not for good. I did stay away for a couple of years only working on keeping my sites up (very limited). I kept paying for hosting and my domain names and eventually decided to tackle it again. And one more time I fell for the big sale invested way to much in a coaching course (I did get a free trip to LA). It was seriously flawed from the beginning in that it felt like even though they paid for my ticket and hotel they were not prepared for me to actually show up. I didn’t get to meet the “Guru” who was supposed to be my coach until the last day and then for 10 minutes.  When I signed up I was assured that it was not a program designed around Adwords as I was not prepared to spend anymore. But of course it was. The coach I did have was good and very knowledgeable. But we seemed to be all over the map in terms of setting out a course of action.

I have found I work best if I have a guide – step 1, step 2 etc. When I can follow along, I never have any problems and I have accomplished a lot. But with no direction just a comparison type review html site I was very frustrated.  I did have a few coaching calls after but then my coach left, another one came on board, and he left … you get my drift.

Finally I just decided to knuckle down and build my own sites and along the way met someone who’s product I was selling as an affiliate. He made a big difference. He looked at my site told me what to tweak and where, in no time I was on page 1  of google. I would like to say I repeated the process over and over but I didn’t that was the site I got hit by Google with and that deflated my sails. I worked at building out the other sites and got some good ratings but no income. I had to stick with the J.O.B. and my time was taken up a lot with that.

So Now I am hopeful that this challenge will help me to understand the “system” that I know I can follow, rinse and repeat.

to be continued …

The Journey Continues

After moving to Montana from Toronto, I was still very interested in the internet but didn’t actually become involved as a marketer until 2002. I joined a very and I mean very expensive program (5 figures) that was “guaranteed to get my business up and running. htmlIt did have a very good piece of software – web based that helped build html web sites. But the training was sporadic and thin. We were on bi-weekly coaching calls with a Q & A session. In the end it was very ineffective, if you were one of the lucky ones to get a question answered you often came away more confused than when you started. There were no guides or tutorials and in those days certainly no videos.

I put up a number of niche sites, had them monetized with products and Adsense. But no real idea of what I was doing. The products related to my niche sites, but I didn’t have any faith in them or passion for them. I wrote articles for each of them. I put Google Analytics on them I started tracking traffic.  But no sales. It took me 5 years on 10 sites to make $100 in Adsense revenue. I joined a bazillion article marketing sites and wrote tons of articles linking back to my sites … but the directories were not effective. I found lots of them but somehow missed out on Ezine Articles!

I was so disappointed and so deeply in debt I was through with the internet. I felt beat up and abused. I maintained my sites more or less as a hobby but no one told me it was important to make my own products. I thought that affiliate marketing was it! That was the business model I bought into and thought I was doing everything I could to be successful. I worked long hours (8 hrs at my day job and another 10 on IM).

So I quit! Some weeks I didn’t even look at my niche sites. I was resigned to concluding that I was a failure, I couldn’t make it in Internet Marketing.

First Post

Well this is my first attempt at a “blog”, I am not sure what I am doing, but I am part of a challenge called the Quick Start Challenge and I don’t want to let my team-mates down. Nor do I want to let myself down … so here goes.  I have been online since 1993, before they had color, before we had the ability to have pictures and graphics, or sound.

Yeah, way back in the dark ages 🙄 At the time I was renovating an 85 year old home in Toronto, Canada, working long hard physical hours. Old_computer-4My son was the one to encourage me to try “the internet”.  My first experience with computers was in the 80’s when I owned a travel agency, we used computers to book flights, vacations and print airline tickets. And of course used it as a word processor.

It wasn’t a huge leap for me to try the internet … or so I thought. My son ghosted my aging dinosaur through his newer model and by some magic, I was connected to the internet. At first the only communication I had was with his other “computer nerd” friends. (My son has gone on to own and sell several successful software companies).

It didn’t take long for me to be somewhat bored as I knew nothing and had no interest in computer programming.  I had written a software program that helped my alphabetize lots of data … and that was my only foray into programming.  So I started exploring the “boards” and found one on pen pals. It was hilarious. The majority of the men were trying desperately to find dates/girlfriends. I used to read their posts at the end of the day, dog tired from knocking down walls or putting them up. But they were so funny, so awful that I found the comedic relief wonderful.

And then one day I found a post by a normal guy – OMG. He lived in Montana. Even though I had traveled extensively I knew very little about Montana. So we started writing to each other. 78 letters in 3 weeks, I had to find out if this man was real or if it was all smoke and mirrors. On the way to the airport my son asked what does he look like? I said I don’t know he is 6 ‘1″ with wavy long brown hair. My son then said: “but Mom what if he is a geek?”. I told him that was what return tickets were for.  I stayed two weeks, came home engaged and we were married 6 months later. And as they say the rest is history.
